Amgen Biotech Experience: Scientific Discovery in the Classroom
April 23, 2018
Over the course of two evenings, students in the Biology Club, under the direction of Ms Fox, were involved in a fantastic Forensic Science Workshop. They learnt the art of micro-pipetting and gel electrophoresis. A micropipette is a very fine tubing for measuring, transferring, or injecting very small quantities of liquid. Gel electrophoresis is a laboratory method used to separate mixtures of DNA, RNA, or proteins according to molecular size. When they perfected these skills, they went on to solve a crime scene! The students really enjoyed these hands-on, trial and error learning experiences and at getting to the bottom of contrived crimes.
The programme is run by AMGEN through DCU. The Amgen Foundation’s Mission is to inspire the next generation of innovators by funding science education programs at every level, from Post Primary schools like Scoil Chonglais to the world's premier educational institutions. Scoil Chonglais was delighted with the opportunity to take part.
