Technic Mechanisms and Robotics Club host exhibition
April 5, 2017
The Technic and Robotics Club is now in its second year in the school and is working towards the promotion of stem subjects through a variety of initiatives. First year MTM students are using the base and mid range models to develop their knowledge of mechanisms and visual skills in a fun and practical way.
Second year students are working on robotic applications and programming in an extra curricular way (mainly at lunchtime). They are using Mindstorms NXT and EV3 bricks (computers) to develop the robots. The programming is done with the EV3 software package. The robots worked on so far include a Rubiks cube solver, a ball sorter and a vehicle used for picking up and dropping off. It is hoped that the club will be in a position to buy more Mindstorms kits and develop the programming where it can become co curricular in the classroom. The second years are also borrowing high end Technic models which they put together at home.
It is also planned to use the Technic components to assist senior students when designing Leaving Certificate project coursework. The models contain a very wide range of mechanisms which can be mirrored in the coursework.
Some Technic and Mindstorms Quick Questions
Is it best to buy the kits new?
Yes because you are sure that all parts are there and working
Can I buy second hand?
Yes there is good value available online – best options are adverts.ie for Technic models (new and second hand) and ebay for Mindstorms kits. Ask for advice on this or look up Bricklink for price guide. Adverts.ie has a good range of new and used models available
What if a piece is missing?
Each kit has an inventory of parts at the back of the instruction booklet. The parts can be bought at a good rate new or second hand from Bricklink.com or new from Lego.com
Are there books for programming the Mindstorms Brick (computer)
There are a number of good books but the best would be a book by Laurens Valk called EV3 Discovery Book
Are NXT and EV3 kits compatable
The new EV3 software will programme the old NXT and NXT 2.0 bricks.
The NXT software will not programme the EV3 brick. The NXT sensors and motors can be used with the EV3 Brick
Can anyone join the club ?
Yes – but Mr Dolan and Mr Connolly will let students know when places are available.
What if I need help or advice on kits that I want to buy or already have?
Talk to Mr Dolan or Mr Connolly and they will be able to give advice on both Technic Kits and Mindstorms Robots.
