The 25th European Youth Chess Championship 2015 will take place in Porec (Croatia) from 20th September to 1st October 2015 (www.porec2015.org). And three students of Scoil Chonglais, chess players, and neighbours in Baltinglass, will be there, playing for Ireland, with more than 800 young players coming from 41 different European countries.
Mercedes Plaza (2nd Year) will represent Ireland in the “Under 14 – Girls” category. Mercedes is the top rated Irish chess player among girls in her age, and was the first girl in the past Irish Junior Chess Championship 2015.
Agustín Plaza (Transition Year) will play the “Under 16 – Open” category. Agustín was the “top improver” in the May 2015 list of the Irish Chess Union. His ICU rating jumped from 884 in May 2014 to 1541 in May 2015.
Leire Plaza (1st Year) will also play in the “Under 12 – Girls” category. Leire is the top FIDE rated chess player in her age.
Later in October, Mercedes and Agustín will also represent Ireland in the FIDE World Youth & Cadets Chess Championships (Halkidiki, Greece. 24 October - 6 November 2015).
Chess is a powerful tool for children development. The European Parliament voted in favor of introducing chess as a subject in March 2012. In Ireland there are different initiatives promoting junior chess and chess in Schools.
But just here, in our School, we were able to begin a small chess club and to hold the Baltinglass' first chess tournament at Scoil Chonglais, during St. Patrick's Day.
We would like to encourage all students interested, or having some curiosity, to join the club and enjoy playing with international players, who are our mates and neighbours.
