Student Biodiversity Project: 'B&Bs for Birds and Bugs': Update: ECO-UNESCO People's Choice Award
April 28, 2015
We are delighted to announce that our budding Young Environmentalist Team has been nominated for the ECO-UNESCO People's Choice Award 2015. Members of the public are invited to view details of the project on the ECO-UNESCO website and to vote for their favourite project. We are confident that our team are on to a winning idea here and we ask you to click here and vote for B&B for Birds and Bugs. To add to this great success, the team have now reached the Third Round of the competition and are now competing at All-Ireland level.
An enthusiastic group of 4th and 5th Years from Scoil Chonglais have been working hard since November on their Biodiversity project titled : B&Bs for Birds and Bugs. Mrs. Fox is leading the project.
By Christmas, and with the much appreciated support of Sister Mary Carmody and the team in the Tearmann Gardens, we had set up a Bug Hotel, nesting boxes, feeders and plants. The blooms will be beautiful and useful: they will attract the insects that hatch the larvae that feed the baby birds in the nesting boxes. A food chain and lots of interest for us and, we hope, some new things to watch and enjoy for the many local schools and kindergarten that visit and contribute to the garden.
So far so good. The ominously named Bug Hotel has already attracted many species, ranging from various beetles, springtails and woodlice to lacewing, hoverflies, garden spiders and solitary bees. Sam Connolly has been helping us put a name to the lesser known creatures.
And so the project advances with further plans for the new courtyard at Scoil Chonglais. One nesting box is to be fitted with a nestbox webcam to monitor the hatching and rearing of what we hope will be our first local reality-show Big Brother chicks.
This Eco-Seniors project is entered in the Young Environmentalist Awards of 2015. With yet more ideas coming on stream, we hope everyone will get behind us and vote for us if we make it out of the first round in Dublin on March 26th and 27th next. Watch this space!
