Match Report: First-Year Girls' Football Blitz
November 23, 2014
The first year girls had their first blitz on Thursday 9th October in Baltinglass Football Pitch. Scoil Chonglais fielded 2 teams on the day as well as 3 teams from St. Kevin Community College, Dunlavin and 1 team from Blessington Community College. Despite the cold weather 23 1st Year footballers took part in the matches.
Scoil Chonglais 1 got off to a great start winning by 4-1 to 2-0 against St. Kevins 1. Shauna Gahan got Scoil Chonglais 1 into the lead by scoring a goal shortly followed by Lateefat Oshidi. St. Kevins 1 could only get one goal in for the first half. Amber Doyle scored a magnificent goal and the game continued going strong with Jasmine Malone scoring a point in the second half. St. Kevins 1 scored a goal but it was not enough. The game was finished with Lateefat Oshidi scoring yet again another excellent goal.
Scoil Chonglais 2 also got off to a great start against St. Kevins 3. Hannah McHugh started the scoring with a point, followed by another point from Katelyn Coffey. A goal from Hannah McHugh before halftime left the scoreboard 1-2 to 0-0. Playing downhill in the second half, Scoil Chonglais kept St. Kevins scoreless whilst Katelyn Coffey scored another goal. Scoil Chonglais won 2-2 to 0-0, with great performances from Hannah McHugh, Louise McGeer, Katelyn Coffey and Beibhinn Wilkins.
Scoil Chonglais 1's next game was against St Kevins 3. Lateefat Oshidi continued her strong game performance by scoring a goal shortly after the match started. St Kevins nearly equalised but Scoil Chonglais 1 were lucky with the ball hitting the post. St. Kevins then scored another 2 points but Scoil Chonglais 1 didn't let them come back, with Amber Doyle scoring a goal just before the first half finished. Shortly after the second half commenced, St. Kevins came fighting back again scoring a point and two goals. Kate Brown scored a goal in the second half which equalised the two teams.
Scoil Chonglais 2's next match was against Blessington. Again, the opposition was left scoreless whilst Scoil Chonglais got great scores from Katelyn Coffey, Louise McGeer and Hannah McHugh. Scoil Chonglais won convincingly with a final score of 5-2 to 0-0.
Scoil Chonglais 1's next game was against Blessington. Scoil Chonglais 1's Natasha Smith scored a point in the beginning of the match and Lateefat Oshidi soon following by scoring a goal. Just before the first half ended, Jasmine Malone kept Scoil Chonglais 1 far ahead by scoring a point. Lateefat Oshidi scored a goal soon after and Jasmine Malone scored yet again a superb point. Unfortunately, Lateefat Oshidi had to be helped off the pitch just before the end of the first half. Blessington came back strong, by scoring a goal shortly into the second half. They also scored a point but it was not enough to beat Scoil Chonglais 1.
Scoil Chonglais 2 were faced with their first real challenge against St. Kevins 2. We opened the scoring with a point from Katelyn Coffey but it was clear this match wasn't going to be as easy as the others after St. Kevins equalised. Another St. Kevins point was the only other score of the half. The second half started badly for Scoil Chonglais with a goal for St. Kevins. Despite two excellent saves by goalkeeper Emily Gahan, the ball eventually found the back of the net for St. Kevins second goal. Scoil Chonglais fought back with a goal and there was a rush to get another before the final whistle blew, but sadly we ran out of time which resulted in our first loss of the day against a very strong St. Kevins side. The final score was 2-0 to 2-2.
The next match was valued as the most important game according to the players and management – Scoil Chonglais 1 against Scoil Chonglais 2. Judging by the team talks, led by Dean and Lorna for Scoil Chonglais 1 and Seán and Ms Hogan for Scoil Chonglais 2, we were set for an exciting match. The game was scoreless for most of the first half but then Scoil Chonglais 1 were awarded a free which Lateefat Oshodi put over the bar. The half time team talks were intense as both teams were looking for their bragging rights. It was Scoil Chonglais 2 that shone in the second half though with three superb goals from Hannah McHugh which drove the sideline crazy. Scoil Chonglais 2 tried to fight back with a goal from Amber Doyle and a point from Shauna Gahan but it was too late.
Scoil Chonglais 1 unfortunatly lost their last match against St. Kevins 2. St. Kevins 2 started off the scoreboard by scoring a goal in the first half very quickly. Scoil Chonglais 1 could only get a point and St. Kevins 2 had the lead after the first half. Scoil Chonglais could only get one other point in for the second half but St. Kevins scored another 2 goals and 2 points.
Scoil Chonglais 2 tried to put the excitement of the last match behind as the final match of the day was still to be played. Scoil Chonglais 2 played St. Kevins 1 in the final match. The game started slowly but Scoil Chonglais managed to get a brilliant goal through Niamh Faulkner. St Kevins equalised moments later with an exceptional goal of their own. This was a game that tested Scoil Chonglais' backs as most of the game was played in this area. St. Kevins scored another goal and a point before half time. Scoil Chonglais started the second half with 2 goals – one from Louise McGeer and another from Hannah McHugh. St. Kevins rallied in the final few minutes to score another 2 goals. The final score was 3-0 to 4-1 to St. Kevins despite great performances from Niamh Faulkner and Katie O' Brien.
Overall both teams put in great performances. Thanks to Ms. Hogan and the managers, Seán Branagan, Dean Cassells and Lorna Molloy.
